Robert McConnell (Tampa Bay Water) is at left. Officially, Earth Day falls on April 22, but events around the country were held on various dates throughout the month. On April 11, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) joined forces with Tampa Bay Water to help celebrate Earth Day early at McMullen Booth Elementary School in Clearwater, FL. Kathy Krohn, a volunteer for the USGS Center for Coastal and Watershed Studies in St. Petersburg, improvised a hands-on rock display for the 700 students at the school. (A display entitled "Marshes as Sponges," originally intended for the event, was not used because of 20-knot gusty winds from the northwest.) Tampa Bay Water, a neighbor of the school, was one of the dozen other organizations to participate in the event. Tampa Bay Water is a government agency recently created by agreement among local jurisdictions to provide wholesale water to the communities in the Tampa Bay region.
