Disaster Declared:
10/11/2001

Brief Description:
Indonesia has experienced periods of religious and ethnic conflict for several decades. Since 1999, however, political and economic crises have exacerbated the violence and resulted in population displacements in the Moluccas, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Aceh, Timor, and Papua. According to the United Nations' (U.N) World Food Program (WFP), more than 1.4 million were internally displaced as of June 2002. In response to the humanitarian crises, the USG has provided more than $177 million in emergency assistance to Indonesia since 1999.
