Research Project: INTEGRATED POST-HARVEST RICE MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION DELIVERY: OPTIMIZING INSECT CONTROL AND GRAIN QUALITY

Location: Biological Research

Project Number: 5430-43000-025-08
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Oct 01, 2007
End Date: Sep 30, 2010

Objective:
This cooperative project addresses impact of lesser grain borer infestations on milling quality of stored rice, movement, and dispersal in selected field sites, evaluation of new-reduced risk insecticides to control this species in stored rough rice, predicted impact of management strategies on lesser grain borer populations in the south-central United States, economic analysis of management costs, and integration of control strategies for stored rice.

Approach:
Bioassays will be conducted to determine impact of lesser grain borer infestations on rice milling quality, conduct field studies in which methoprene and spinosad are evaluated for long-term protection of stored rough rice, and simulation studies to predict the impact of aeration and insecticidal control on lesser grain borer populations. Monitoring studies will be conducted at field sites, identification of insects in trap samples will be made, plus processing and statistical analysis of data from the various lesser grain borer monitoring studies.
