Writing Metadata:
Scientists and non-scientists learn to write metadata at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center in
Lafayette through the Federal Geographic Data Committee and the National Biological Information
training program.

On May 10th, the USGS National Wetlands Research Center conducted a metadata creation workshop.
The four-hour class focused on the Biological Profile of the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial
Metadata (CSDGM), while utilizing a stand-alone metadata creation software tool. The SMMS 3.2
metadata software includes the biological extensions of the CSDGM, such as taxonomic information and
methodology. The class of 13 participants, ranging from biologists to geographers to information
transfer specialists, was given the opportunity to create a metadata record for their own data set.
The training was conducted as part of the Federal Geographic Data Committee's "Don't Duck Metadata"
and the National Biological Information Infrastructure metadata training program.
