Research Project: RESIDUE ANALYSIS OF MINOR USE PESTICIDES

Location: Wapato, Washington

Project Number: 0500-00007-082-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Nov 01, 2005
End Date: Aug 31, 2010

Objective:
Determine the amount, persistence and fate of pest insect control chemicals and their toxic breakdown products in minor agricultural crops in the U.S. These efforts serve growers and commodity groups by providing data in support of registration/re-registration petitions to EPA through IR-4 Minor Use Program. Many current minor uses are expected to be lost during the tolerance reassessment mandated by the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. This project will support replacing the old pesticides with safer chemistries.

Approach:
Minor agricultural crops treated with insect control chemicals such as pyrethroids, organophosphates and carbamates will be chemically analyzed to determine the amount, persistence and distribution of these chemicals and their breakdown products. The data collected will be forwarded through designated channels and used to establish tolerances and obtain registration for the use of these chemicals on minor crops. Also, new efficient procedures for the extraction, cleanup, and determination of residues of these pesticides in crops will be developed to more rapidly expedite these registration processes. Replacing 0500-00007-51-00D (06/2003) and 0500-00007-067-00D (11/2005).
