Research Project:
LARGE-SCALE FIELD DEMONSTRATION/VALIDATION OF METHYL BROMIDE ALTERNATIVES FOR GEORGIA VEGETABLE PRODUCTION
Location: Subtropical Plant Pathology Research
Project Number: 0500-00044-020-01
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 12, 2007
End Date: Sep 30, 2011
Objective:
Conduct replicated, large-scale field trials focused on methyl bromide alternatives in partnership with commercial vegetable growers in Georgia using locations that collectively represent the diversity of the commercial production systems. 2. Collect biological, environmental, chemical, physical, operational, and economic data required for multi-disciplinary assessment of the methyl bromide alternatives. 3. Identify key variables and their critical values responsible for consistent and effective pest control and crop performance with methyl bromide alternatives.
Approach:
Three trials (locations) will be initiated in South Georgia during January/February 2007. Each trial will grow a spring crop of pepper and fall crop (double crop) of cucumber on the same fumigated, plastic-mulched beds. Both crops will be harvested four times with each harvest being run through commercial packing house to obtain exact measurements of marketable yield. Soil fumigation treatments will applied in mid-January, 2007. Each trial will have 5 different methyl bromide alternative treatments with 3 replications each (15 plots total).
