Research Project: ORNAMENTAL PLANT GERMPLASM CENTER

Location: North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station, Ames, Iowa

Project Number: 3625-21000-044-09
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 28, 2004
End Date: Aug 31, 2008

Objective:
To conserve, distribute, and assess ornamental plant germplasm and develop new technologies and protocols for conserving seed and clonally-propagated germplasm for effective utilization in agriculture.

Approach:
Develop more rapid and efficient methods for conserving germplasm, for identifying useful properties of genes and genomes, and for rapidly and efficiently manipulating genetic and genomic material and information. New approaches to the characterization and biosystematic classification of ornamental germplasm and for the application of new biotechnoogies will support the development of new floral and nursery crops.
