The museum opened in 1930 with 10.000m2 of exhibition space, making it one of the largest and most modern museums of the time. By 1937, the Museum presented over 1200 European-wide exhibitions visited by over 30 million people. The centerpiece of the museum has always been mankind, the human body, man's social and cultural surroundings and his relationship to the environment. The main attraction is the "Transparent Man", first shown in 1930. Educational material about human anatomy, health and hygiene was produced by the museum. In the 1950s, the "Transparent Horse" and the "Transparent Cow" were presented. In 1996, the German Hygiene Museum co-designed the theme park "Man - Nature - Technology" for the World Exhibition EXPO 2000 in Hanover. |
