Research Project: FIELD AND LABORATORY STUDIES TO IMPROVE PHEROMONE OF NAVEL ORANGEWORM

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality

Project Number: 5302-43000-033-03
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: May 01, 2003
End Date: Mar 31, 2008

Objective:
To identify and synthesize the unknown compound we have recently found in pheromone gland extracts of both NOW and P. farinalis. To test the activity of the unknown compound in laboratory and field experiments and to optimize the blend ratio, release rate, and formulations of the pheromone blend in field bioassays, using unmated NOW females as positive controls.

Approach:
Syntheses and chemical identifications will be conducted by our collaborator, Dr. J. Millar, at the Univ. of CA at Riverside. The Kuenen lab at ARS (SJVASC) will conduct wind tunnel experiments with fractionated gland extracts to determine the fractions required to elicit full response my male NOW and then will verify in the wind tunnel and field tests that blends of synthetic compounds approximating/equaling these fractions will elicit the same full response from NOW males. Documents Trust with Suterra LLC. Log 24172. Formerly 5302-43000-030-01T (3/2008).
