Research Project:
BIOTECHNOLOGY TO ADDRESS FOOD CHALLENGES IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD
Project Number: 0210-22310-002-50
Project Type:
Grant
Start Date: Aug 01, 2003
End Date: Jul 31, 2008
Objective:
The objectives are two-fold: First, to evaluate viral-resistant cassava for use in West Africa; Second, to address the issue of food and feed contaminated with mycotoxins in the developing world.
Approach:
Work will emphasize, via field trials of cassava resistant to mosaic disease, the development of nigeria's biosafety and crop evaluation system. The cooperator (Danforth Center) will work regional partners, including the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the National Root Crop Research Institute (NRCRI), to conduct cassava evaluations under natural conditions. The cooperator and its partners will also organize a workshop/conference to address issues related to mycotoxin-contaminated food and feedstuffs in developing countries and discuss potential solutions inclusive of biotechnological approaches.
