Research Project:
QUANTIFYING POTENTIAL REDUCTIONS IN SEDIMENT LOADINGS FROM STREAMBANK EROSION IN A LARGE AGRICULTURAL WATERSHED
Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit
Project Number: 6408-13000-018-31
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Sep 01, 2007
End Date: Sep 30, 2008
Objective:
The objectives of the study are to (1) determine rates and loadings of sediment from streambank erosion along main stem reaches of a large agricultural watershed and (2) simulate the magnitude of load reductions that could be obtained using various mitigation measures.
Approach:
The major controlling processes responsible for bank erosion will be modeled using the Bank-Stability and Toe-Erosion Model (BSTEM) developed by the USDA-ARS, National Sedimentation Laboratory and has been previously used successfully in the Mid South and other regions. Results for existing and mitigated conditions at five representative reaches will be extrapolated to the remainder of the main stem channel using field and aerial reconnaissance of the extent of streambank failures. Geotechnical tests of representative banks will be conducted to determine appropriate input parameters for the modeling efforts. Deliverable would be an NSL Technical Report on this research.
