Research Project:
HYDROS: THE HYDROSPHERE STATE MISSION PROJECT
Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory
Project Number: 1265-13610-027-43
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Jul 12, 2004
End Date: Jun 30, 2007
Objective:
The Hydros Project will provide the first gloabal view of the Earths changing soil moisture and surface freeze/thaw conditions, enabling new hydrologic applications and new scientific investigations of global change and atmospheric predictability. The Hydros Project will design, build, launch and operate the Hydros spacecraft to provid the global measurements of soil moisture and surface freez/thaw conditions.
Approach:
Dr. Jackson will lead the Hydros team activities in planning future field experiments and campaigns established for the purpose of acquiring data for development and validation of Hydros soil moisture retrieval algorithms. Dr. Jackson will also participate with other Hydros team members in processing, archival, and analysis of data acquired in previous field experiments including SMEX02, SMEX03 and SMEX 04. Future field campaign planning includes collaborative campaigns with international partners including the European and Canadian Space Agencies. Dr. Jackson and HRSL staff will also support development of techniques for assimilation of passive and active data for soil moisture retrieval.
