Research Project:
VALIDATION OF SATELLITE ESTIMATES OF SOIL MOISTURE IN THE SOUTHERN GREAT PLAINS
Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory
Project Number: 1265-13610-027-27
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Feb 01, 2003
End Date: Jan 31, 2008
Objective:
Continue to provide ground based estimates of soil moisture at field and regional scales within the Southern Great Plains concurrent with aircraft and satellite observations. These results provide critical information necessary for the wide scale adoption of remote sensing products in research and applications in hydrology, climate and agriculture.
Approach:
Large scale multidisciplinary experiments will be conducted in the Southern Great Plains to address critical issues involving soil moisture retrieval alorithms that will be used with data from current and future satellite sensor systmes. Sites will be selected cooperatively for ground validations and data will be collected during intensive observing periods. These may include several weeks of daily measurements and monthly observations over extended periods.
