Research Project: REDUCING EROSION AND PHOSPHORUS RUNOFF IN POTATO SYSTEMS

Location: New England Plant, Soil and Water Research Laboratory

Project Number: 1915-62660-001-04
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 01, 2006
End Date: Mar 31, 2007

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to facilitate research evaluating options for controlling runoff and erosion in potato production systems.

Approach:
The research conducted occurs in two phases. In the first phase, a rainfall simulator located in the USDA-ARS-NEPSWL is used to assess the impact of cover crops, mulch hay, and polyacrylamide application on runoff, erosion, and phosphorus movement. In the second phase, similar technology is used to assess runoff and erosion under field conditions.
