Research Project: DEVELOPMENT OF BASE POPULATION TO SELECT FOR DURABLE LATE BLIGHT RESISTANCE IN PROCESSING POTATOES Project Number: 0500-00042-001-69
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Mar 21, 2005
End Date: Mar 20, 2007

Objective:
Develop a base population with resistance to late blight from a broad spectrum of resistance sources; incorporate durable late blight resistance genes into selected adapted commercial varieties and advanced breeding clones; and screen for resistance to late blight under controlled environment - in the laboratory and greenhouse conditions.

Approach:
Use different sources of resistance as parents in a crossing work to produce the base population to develop durable late blight resistance in our breeding materials, an example of sources of resistance would include LBR clones available at the Potato Introduction Station (NRSP-6, Sturgeon Bay, WI), late blight resistant clones and varieties form other breeding programs (e.g. AWN 86514, B0718-3, B0767-2, var. Innovator, Defender, Sangema and Tollocan). Materials will be screened under controlled environment - greenhouse and laboratory conditions. Tuber resistance and foliage resistance will be screened using a complex P. infestans strains following reported greenhouse and laboratory methods (Vleeshouwers et al., 1999; Dorrance & Inglis, 1999, 2000, Partipilo et al., 2000).
