Research Project:
DEVELOPMENT OF IMPROVED SOYBEAN VARIETIES WITH LESS ALLERGENS
Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research
Project Number: 6645-21000-026-23
Project Type:
Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Dec 07, 2007
End Date: Sep 30, 2012
Objective:
Develop soybean germplasm and varieties with improved tolerance to biotic and/or abiotic stress, improved intrinsic seed composition, and improved productivity in a variety of agricultural environments.
Approach:
Improved soybeans will be developed using conventional plant breeding methods that will include DNA analysis for genotyping purposes. Various testing, phenotyping and genotyping experiments will be done in cooperation with NCSU collaborators. Field testing of new soybean germplasm will be primarily done at N.C. State University experiment stations. When experimental protocol requires, testing may be conducted on farms. Experiments that require controlled environmental conditions will be conducted in the NCSU phytotron. Experiments requiring tests of soybean allergenicity will be done in cooperation with collaborators at the N.C. State University College of Veterinary Medicine, or the Departments of Animal and Poultry Science.
