Research Project:
SOLVING REGISTRATION ISSUES WITH METHYL BROMIDE ALTERNATIVES
Location: Water Management Research
Project Number: 5302-13220-003-13
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 12, 2004
End Date: Dec 01, 2007
Objective:
To develop information and technologies that will relieve registration constraints for methyl bromide alternatives and make alternative materials available and practical for growers.
Approach:
Although there are several alternative fumigants that can be efficacious and serve as a replacement for methyl bromide for soil pre-plant fumigations, in some cases, usefulness of the materials are limited by regulatory issues. The research will utilize field plots to test the efficacy new materials including Agent 2B on strawberries and carrots, to determine the relative weed control efficacy of drip vs. shank applied 1, 3-D, Iodomethane, and chloropicrin on perennial crops, to determine the relative emissions from drip applied fumigants compared to shank applied fumigants, and to develop sealing practices that minimize emissions. This research will generate information that can be used by commondity groups, manufacturers, and regulatory agencies to develop labels for new materials or expand labels on currently-used materials.
