Research Project:
IMPROVING SUCCESS OF WILLOW CUTTINGS PLANTED IN DAMAGED RIPARIAN ZONES
Location: Water Quality and Ecology Research
Project Number: 6408-13660-006-05
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jul 03, 2001
End Date: Jun 30, 2006
Objective:
Previously completed research has identified factors controlling the success of willow (Salix sp.) cuttings planted on rapidly eroding streams to control erosion and initiate riparian zone recovery. This project seeks to refine procedures for assessing site suitability for willow plantings and for preparing cuttings for planting in ways that enhance plant success and vigor, including soaking in water.
Approach:
Use a combination of laboratory (greenhouse), field, and field station experiments to refine and evaluate site suitability indices for willow plantings. Evaluate the physiologic response of willow cuttings to soaking and establish relationships between soaking treatment and plant performance in optimal and stresses habitats.
