Research Project:
PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF BOVINE VIRAL DIARRHEA VIRUSES CARRIED BY PERSISTENTLY INFECTED ANIMALS IDENTIFIED IN NAHMS SURVEY
Location: Virus and Prion Diseases of Livestock
Project Number: 3625-32000-087-13
Project Type:
Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Apr 01, 2008
End Date: Dec 31, 2010
Objective:
The purpose of this Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement (NFCA) is to document the requirements of the collaborative effort between USDA-APHIS-VS, Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health and USDA-ARS, National Animal Disease Center. Activities covered by this NFCA include confirmation of persistent infection (PI) of calves tested positive for bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) during the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) Beef 2007-08 study. This will be done by testing of a second sample collected by the producer. The laboratory will determine the genotype of viruses the are found to infect confirmed (PI) animals.
Approach:
AHIS-VS-CEAH NAHMS staff will facilitate on-farm collection of ear notches from spring calving herds on beef operations in 24 states to be tested for persistently infected (PI) with bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus and arrange for samples to be provided to ARS-NADC. APHIS-VS-CEAH will receive, track, and archive all samples as well as handling all correspondence with producers. The ARS-NADC will perform testing and provide results for confirmation of PI status and typing of the BVD virus to APHIS-VS-CEAH. APHIS-VS-CEAH will prepare all reports to owners/producers/submitters.
