Research Project: COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON DIFFERENT TEST PLATFORMS FOR DETECTION OF BVDV IN EAR NOTCH SAMPLES AT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-DAVIS

Location: Virus and Prion Diseases of Livestock

Project Number: 3625-32000-087-10
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 21, 2007
End Date: Jun 30, 2008

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to compare detection of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in ear notch samples from cattle using two commercial test kits (Idexx and AnDiaTec) and "in house" real-time PCR tests currently used in accredited diagnostic laboratories.

Approach:
Ear notch samples, derived from both persistently infected and normal cattle, will be collected by researchers at the National Animal Disease Center (NADC). These samples will be assembled into panels and sent to University of California-Davis (UC-DAVIS) for evaluation using two commercial test kits (Idexx and AnDiaTec) and "in house" real-time PCR tests that are current standard operating procedure at the UC-DAVIS testing facility. Panels sent to UC-DAVIS will be blinded. UC-DAVIS will provide results back to the NADC where they will be compared to results generated at two different diagnostic laboratories.
