Research Project: COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON DIFFERENT TEST PLATFORMS FOR DETECTION OF BVDV PERSISTENTLY INFECTED (PI) CATTLE USING EAR NOTCH SAMPLES

Location: Virus and Prion Diseases of Livestock

Project Number: 3625-32000-087-06
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Feb 20, 2007
End Date: Jun 30, 2008

Objective:
Design testing protocols for bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) that are appropriately validated, economic, and efficient.

Approach:
Compare detection of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in pooled ear notch samples from cattle using two commercial test kits and "in house" real-time PCR tests currently used in accredited diagnostic laboratories. These studies will generate data that producers and diagnosticians can use in choosing the best tests for surveillance programs. The design of effective surveillance programs will be critical to efforts to eradicate BVDV from North America.
