Most Recent Disaster Declaration:
Flooding, 10-26-2007

Heavy rains in mid-September led to widespread flooding across Slovenia, including flash floods on September 17, which killed seven people. The flooding, which affected 43 municipalities or an estimated one-third of the country, destroyed personal property and public infrastructure and caused more than $285 million in damage. According to the Government of Slovenia (GOS), the floods caused more than $100 million in damage to Zelezniki Municipality alone, where a seven foot wall of water swept away hundreds of cars, buses, and people, damaging homes, a medical clinic, and a local water treatment plant. On September 18, the GOS declared the floods a national disaster.

On October 26, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Maryruth Coleman declared a disaster due to the extent of the flood-related damages. In response, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance provided $50,000 through the U.S. Embassy in Ljubljana to a GOS fund for the construction of a water pump station in Zelezniki Municipality.
