Press Conference with Fatmir Sejdiu, President of Kosovo
and Henrietta H. Fore, USAID Administrator and Director of Foreign Assistance

Press Conference with President Sejdiu
Pristina, Kosovo
May 16, 2008

President Sejdiu: Good evening. I have just had a very pleasant and helpful meeting with USAID Administrator Henrietta Fore, Charge D' Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Pristina, Tina Kaidanow, and the USAID delegation, together with the Prime Minister. The discussion focused on the U.S. Government's plans for further assistance to Kosovo. I expressed my appreciation for the diverse projects the U.S. has funded over a long period of time in Kosovo, and for their continued commitment to Kosovo's future. We discussed the priorities for Kosovo's development: economic growth and the rule of law, as well as education and healthcare. The U.S. Government will be a major contributor in these areas.

Once again, I would like to express my gratitude to Administrator Fore and the U.S. Government for their enormous support for Kosovo.

USAID Administrator and Director of Foreign Assistance Henrietta H. Fore: First, let me extend my congratulations upon Kosovo's independence. This is a historic step and my visit enforces the deep commitment of the United States to the future of Kosovo.

This is my first visit to Kosovo, but we have long been partners, since the opening of our first office in 1996 in Pristina. Those were different times, difficult times, and today is a new time with new challenges. In looking at these challenges, I particularly want to focus on the importance of small and medium size enterprises as places for job growth, and the importance of rule of law and education, as the essential basis for Kosovo's future.

United States assistance to Central and Eastern Europe has sought to support the region's people in their aspirations for peace, freedom and prosperity and to assist those who would courageously push forward to institutionalize political democracy and economic pluralism.

Over the past nine years, $1.2 billion in U.S. assistance has been committed to the reconstruction of Kosovo, the building of institutions and a viable economy, and to helping strengthen the functioning of your democratic state.

I will be leading the U.S. delegation at the upcoming Donors' Conference in Brussels. I'm looking forward to this important event, and based on the good work of the government, I am confident that Kosovo will receive substantial assistance from donors, including the United States.

My thanks to the President and to the Prime Minister for receiving me today. I have conveyed to them our deep commitment to working together with Kosovo's government and the people to ensure a better future for everyone here and for all the communities of Kosovo. I look forward to the rest of my visit. Thank you.
