Research Project:
COOPERATIVE WORK ON THE GENETIC DETERMINANTS OF MILLING QUALITY IN WHEAT
Location: Soft Wheat Quality Research
Project Number: 3607-43440-005-06
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 26, 2006
End Date: Jun 30, 2008
Objective:
Research trials involving near-isogenic wheat lines differing for genes that affect milling quality, Lr47 and PinB.
1) Cooperator will grow two trials at one location in California to complete the second year of a research trial to measure the effect of these genes on milling quality of wheat.
2) Cooperator will use appropriate field plot technique to grow and harvest trials and then ship quality samples to the Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory for milling and baking evaluation.
3) The Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory will consult with the UC Davis cooperator in the interpretation of the results in preparation for publication of results.
Approach:
The University of California cooperator will grow a replicated trial of near-isogenic wheat lines at Tule Lake California using appropriate small plot experimental technique. Funds from the cooperative agreement will cover expenses related to production of the trials, travel to and from Davis to Tule Lake, and harvest of experimental trials. The cooperator will ship to the Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory, Wooster OH 500 grams of grain from each harvested plot. Harvested samples will be evaluated for milling and baking quality by the Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory using standard protocols of the American Association of Cereal Chemistry. Quality evaluations represent the USDA-ARS in-house contribution to the Specific Cooperative Agreement.
