Research Project:
BREEDING AND GENETICS OF FUSARIUM HEAD BLIGHT RESISTANCE IN BARLEY
Project Number: 0500-00053-002-04
Project Type:
Grant
Start Date: May 13, 2004
End Date: May 12, 2009
Objective:
Develop marker information for genetic diversity and FHB resistance in barley; accelerate development of Fusarium resistant barley varieties. Use marker selection for FHB resistance in barley.
Approach:
Map and validate quantitative trait loci (QTL) for FHB in three sources of disease resistance (Chevron, Frederickson, Atahualpa). Make markers identified to be tightly linked to FHB QTL available for breeding. Fine-map two FHB QTL identified in the Frederickson mapping population. Screen a diverse set of barley germplasm with five simple sequence repeat markers that span the QTL region to assess diversity and identify a set of haplotypes to investigate new DOM accumulation alleles. Set up greenhouse experiments and field trials to identify resistant lines to use as parents in advanced cycle crosses to develop resistant varieties or evaluate in advanced disease, yield and quality trials as new resistant candidates. Evaluate populations derived from crosses among resistant and susceptible varieties that segregate for some or all of these traits. Perform "targeted" background selection. Pyramid existing alleles at FHB QTL in elite malting quality backgrounds.
