Research Project: SURVEY OF EMERGING BIOTYPE B AND Q BEMISIA TABACI-TRANSMITTED VIRUSES ON VEGETABLE CROPS AND ALTERNATIVE WHITEFLY MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

Location: Charleston, South Carolina

Project Number: 6659-22000-018-02
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Sep 01, 2008
End Date: Aug 31, 2011

Objective:
The objective is to determine through surveys and whitefly biology tests, the presence of viruses transmitted by Biotype B and Q of Bemisia tabaci (Complex) on vegetable crops in the field, and investigate strategies for reducing whitefly-vectored geminiviruses by managing the whitefly.

Approach:
Vegetable crops will be surveyed for potential whitefly-vectored viruses, and the plants will be subjected to virus acquisition and transmission experiments, as well as virus detection from vegetables and the whitefly vector. The project also will investigate whitefly management strategies to control the whitefly.
