Objective:
Establish and coordinate a program evaluating available and developing technologies for the detection and suppression of Formosan termites in the French Quarter and selected public schools of New Orleans ("Operation Full Stop"). This program will: 1) evaluate infestations and prescribe cost effective treatments to be carried out by private pest control operators; 2) evaluate the effectiveness of treatments; and 3) expand inspection and management of structures and trees from the original 15 block area to adjacent areas, including Jackson Square, Washington Artillery Park, and the Public Belt Railway.

Approach:
Private properties will be selected by ARS, in consultation with its cooperators at the New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board and Louisiana State University, from proposals submitted by cooperating pest management professionals. Structures and associated grounds and vegetation will be inspected using infrared themography and other inspection devices. Previously treated properties will be monitored to allow statistical evaluation. Colonies will be characterized and mapped using DNA analysis and mark-release-recapture studies. Control will be attempted using Sentricon baits and evaluated with alate traps and in-ground stations.
