Research Project: MANAGEMENT AND RESISTANCE SOURCES FOR CONTROL OF FHB IN BARLEY Project Number: 0500-00053-001-89
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 01, 2003
End Date: Apr 30, 2008

Objective:
Co-coordinate the screening of elite barley germplasm for resistance to FHB in uniform screening nurseries in MN, ND, Canada and Mexico. Redue FHB and DOn in barley by reducing the in-field production of ascospores and condidia by Gibberella zeae. Split fungicide application and crop management to control FHB in barley.

Approach:
Establish, maintain, inoculate and record disease and physiological characteristics of nurseries at Langdon and Fargo in ND. In controlled environment experiments, a wider range of potential chemical and biological antagonists will be tested. Multiple applications will be made of the best available funcidal treatment to determine if this will reduce FHB and DON at acceptable levels. Field trials will be established at two location in the Minot area and repeated at Fargo. FY06 Titles: 1. Preharvest Management Strategies in Barley to Reduce FHB 2. Quantification of Spores of Fusarium graminearum using a Quick and Accurate ELISA Method 3. Resistance Screening of Elite Barley Germplasm Selections from ND, MN, ICARDA/CIMMYT, & Canada 4. Screening Barley Lines for Scab Resistance in Uniform Nurseries
