Condoms are a key tool needed to effectively mitigate South Africa’s HIV/AIDS and STI epidemics. In its support of the national Department of Health (DOH), USAID provides technical assistance to improve quality and supply management of condoms nationwide.

USAID/South Africa assistance has led to great improvements in the quality of public sector condoms, helping the DOH procure more than 358 million pieces in 2002--an increase of 75% over 2001. In the Western Cape Province, for example, USAID support helped boost male condom stock (which was experiencing frequent stock outs) from 500 000 to more than 4 million piece in 2002. The number of sites offering female condoms expanded from 28 to 114 in all nine provinces.
