Objective:
1) Develop and release corn germplasm with native resistance to major corn insect pests and dissect genetic and chemical mechanisms of resistance. 2) Investigate the biology, pest/host interactions, and chemical ecology of major corn insect pests, especially as they relate to resistance management.
Approach:
Objective 1: Systematically screen exotic corn germplasm, identify potential sources of resistance, verify resistance, and move into adapted germplasm. Recurrently select specific populations developed for their resistance to western corn rootworm larval feeding. QTL mapping populations will be evaluated for rootworm resistance in multiple locations, and loci associated with rootworm resistance will be identified and genetically mapped. Characterize agronomic traits of the resistant germplasm and work toward the release of resistant germplasm. Evaluate native resistance sources in combination with seed treatments.
Objective 2: Investigate the biology, pest/host interactions, and chemical ecology of major corn insect pests, especially as they relate to resistance management.
