Research Project: CONTROL OF DNA DELETION DURING SPECIFIC FLOWERING STAGES

Location: Plant Gene Expression Center Albany_CA

Project Number: 5335-21000-031-01
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 28, 2004
End Date: Aug 31, 2009

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to conduct research in developing molecular tools to provide the option to remove unneeded DNA from the transgenic plants through the regulated expression or repression of recombination proteins controlled by flower specific regulatory elements.

Approach:
A set of gene promoters that can activate or repress gene expression during flower development will be fused to recombinase genes and transformed into higher plants. The plants will be examined for the controlled expression or repression of recombinase genes during specific stages of plant reproductive development. The set of plants will be crossed with a second set of plants with recombination sites flanking the DNA to be deleted. The progeny from the cross will be examined for effective promotion or blockage of recombinase mediated removal of designated transgenic DNA during specific stages of plant reproductive development.
