Research Project:
CHARACTERIZATION & UTILIZATION OF GEM BREEDING CROSSES, TOPCROSSES & ADVANCED LINES FOR DROUGHT TOLERANCE, GRAIN MOLD RESIST. & CORN EARWORM
Location: North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station, Ames, Iowa
Project Number: 3625-21000-050-02
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jun 03, 2004
End Date: Mar 31, 2009
Objective:
Characterize GEM germplasm for abiotic and biotic stress tolerance, and use the identified material to develop multiple stress tolerant lines with aflatoxin resistance.
Approach:
Evaluate 100 GEM top crosses in three Texas High Plains locations and three south Texas locations. Continue inbred line development for 300 F3 to F10 generation lines. Confirm with a second year of stress study the top 25 breeding crosses. Repeat the aflatoxin assays conducted in 2005 on the promising ten GEM hybrids in 2006.
