On Tuesday, September 2, we resume our winter schedule: Buildings are closed on Mon. & Tues. and will be open Wed. - Sun. for visitation and tours. The grounds are open all year from dawn to dusk.

Sagamore Hill was the home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the US, from 1885 until his death in 1919.

Theodore Roosevelt's 150th Birthday at Sagamore Hill

On October 26 & 27, 2008, Sagamore Hill will celebrate the 150th birthday of Theodore Roosevelt.

Navy CBs Help Repair Nature Trail Footbridge

Eleven members of the US Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 21 (CBs), Detachment No. 1121, from Fort Schuyler have replaced 70 linear feet of the footbridge. Their work will continue on weekends throughout the Spring 2008.

The footbridge traverses the Eel Creek salt marsh at the foot of the Sagamore Hill Nature Trail connecting to the beach area on Cold Spring Harbor. The volunteer force transported lumber and tools and set up a work area adjacent to the west end of the bridge. The workers replaced the old decking, which was badly deteriorated from the weather, and also replaced joists and supports as necessary.

		Flag Folding On Sunday Afternoons It has become part of the traditon at Sagamore Hill for children to assist in taking down and folding the large U.S. flag that flies in front of President Roosevelt's house every Sunday afternoon. Why Sunday? Well, family visitation is highest on weekends, and that's probably why the Sagamore Hill volunteer who started this tradition - Brendan Casey - likes to spend his Sundays here talking to kids about Theodore Roosevelt and about patriotism. So if you would like to help our rangers and volunteers fold the flag this Sunday, or any afternoon you happen to visit, just ask and we would be glad of your help.

Secretary of Navy visits Sagamore Hill NHS

On May 7, 2008 Secretary of Navy Donald Winters visited Sagamore Hill NHS and presented Superintendent Tom Ross with a print of the Great White Fleet. This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the sailing of the Great White Fleet.

Climate

Summers in Oyster Bay are generally hot and humid. The Theodore Roosevelt home is not air-conditioned. The third floor of the house is subject to closure when the heat reaches dangerous levels.

Winters are generally cold and damp with moderate amounts of snow and ice. Sagamore Hill is usually closed when local school districts announce closures due to snow storms.

Please dress appropriately for the weather. Heavy coats, hats and gloves are recommended for winter; light jackets are usually adequate in spring and fall; and very light clothing is desirable in the summer. Good walking shoes (sneakers, boots, etc.) are recommended for all seasons.
