Research Project:
GENETIC & BEHAVIORAL DISCRIMINATION OF HOST PLANT POPULATIONS OF THE LEAF BEETLE, PSYLLIODES CHALCOMERA FOR BIOCONTROL OF YELLOW STARTHISTLE
Location: Exotic and Invasive Weeds Research
Project Number: 5325-22000-020-25
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Oct 01, 2006
End Date: Aug 31, 2008
Objective:
Develop nonlethal methods to discriminate genetically distinct, but morphologically similar, individuals of a fleabeetle species to be used for biological control of yellow starthistle.
Approach:
We will develop methods using 1) molecular genetics and 2) behavioral assays of host plant specificity inside a quarantine laboratory. Identification of live individuals is critical to avoid inadvertently releasing ones that may not be specific to yellow starthistle. Documents Reimbursable with UC Davis ( CSREES ). Log 31445. (flo)
