Research Project:
SURFACE/SUBSURFACE FLOW INTERACTONS ON A LOWLAND FARM AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PHOSPHORUS LOSS
Location: University Park, Pennsylvania
Project Number: 1902-13000-011-07
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Jul 01, 2005
End Date: Dec 31, 2007
Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research project are to evaluate the influence of subsurface flow conditions on surface runoff contributing areas and related controls on phosphorus (P) loss in the lowland (valley) agricultural setting within the New York City water supply watersheds.
Approach:
Apply a coordinated research effort involving sampling and experimentation at plot, field, and farm scales to: characterize interactions between subsurface and surface water hydrology in the lowland farm setting and their relation to formation of surface runoff contributing areas; compare results of this sampling to the Watershed Agricultural Program¿s designation of Hydrologically Sensitive Areas (HSAs) to either support this approach to on-farm nutrient management or demonstrate potential problems associated with current definitions of HSAs in the lowland setting; quantify on-farm P losses associated with surface runoff in the lowland setting; and identify specific P-contributing areas within the farm to better direct management efforts aimed at reducing P loss to receiving waters.
