Objective:
To conduct field and greenhouse experiments under irrigation of arid saline lands present in the Imperial Valley, California with the objective of improving productivity while mimimizing offsite impacts. Experiments are to be conducted on soil salinity, crop production, and salt tolerance.
Approach:
Imperial Valley Conservation Research Center will conduct research in cooperation with the Salinity Laboratory and other cooperating government agencies, universities, organizations, commodity groups and private industry under specific research protocols to be developed by the Center with cooperators. Research will be conducted on various projects, including the following:
1. Continue studies of the barrier crop potential of a pennisetum designated elephant grass.
2. Continue experiments to evaluate the resistance of sugarbeet genotypes to sugarbeet Rhyzomania under Imperial Valley conditions.
3. Assist ARS and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in conducting the Lower Colorado River Salinity Assessment Network (LORSCAN) program in the Imperial Valley.
