National Information |
The Lake Ontario Lakewide Management Plan (LaMP) is a binational effort by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 2, Environment Canada (EC) , New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) , Ontario Ministry of the Environment (OME) , U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) , Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) , and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) , to restore and protect Lake Ontario.
Several Lake Ontario LaMP reports have been developed since the 1987 which describe the nature of lakewide environmental problems as well as actions underway to address these problems. More recently the Lake Ontario LaMP 2004 Biennial Report describes lakewide environmental problems as well as actions being taken to restore and protect the ecosystem. The LaMP "Update 2005" highlights a variety of US and Canadian activities that are supporting the LaMP's restoration goals and objectives.
AREAS OF CONCERN
New York's Lake Ontario Basin has three Areas of Concern (AOCs), Eighteenmile Creek, Rochester Embayment and, Oswego River Harbor. Significant progress has been made at these AOCs since they were first identified in 1985. The environmental problems that were identified at Oswego River Harbor have been addressed and is posed to become the first US AOC in the Great Lakes Basin to be removed from the list of AOCs.
