Research Project:
USE OF WETLAND SYSTEMS TO TREAT NURSERY RUNOFF
Location: Horticulture and Breeding Research
Project Number: 6618-13000-003-02
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 26, 2007
End Date: Sep 26, 2012
Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research project are to assess the potential of a newly constructed wetland system to assimilate horticultural chemicals prior to entry into water bodies and to assess crushed brick as a secondary treatment to remediate phosphorus and protect water quality.
Approach:
Monitor runoff water (volume and quality) entering and leaving a wetland system, and sample wetland sediments and plants for nutrients and pesticides of concern. Nutrient and pesticide balance will be calculated and the efficiency of the wetland system to remove horticultural chemicals will be determined.
