Research Project: EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL STUDIES OF SEDIMENT MOVEMENT IN SHALLOW OVERLAND FLOWS

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit

Project Number: 6408-13000-018-29
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 29, 2007
End Date: Mar 31, 2012

Objective:
Identify and quantify sediment transport modes and rates in shallow flow on upland areas for different hydraulic regimes and sediment sizes and mixtures, and develop improved sediment transport predictors.

Approach:
Experimental studies will be conducted in laboratory channels to determine the mode and rate of non-cohesive granular material in relation to differences in material characteristics and hydraulic flow regimes. Experiments will be complemented with analytical approaches using continuity and momentum equations for fluids and materials. Improved predictions of sediment transport capacities will be determined from experimental data sets.
