Research Project: ASSESSMENT OF RESPONSES OF SELECTED NATIVE WETLAND PLANTS TO CONDITIONS TYPICAL OF AGRICULTURAL DRAINAGE DITCHES

Location: Water Quality and Ecology Research

Project Number: 6408-13660-006-10
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 26, 2006
End Date: Sep 14, 2011

Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research project are to (1) assess the physiological response of and nutrient retention by two wetland plant species at different soil moisture regimes, and (2) examine interactions among species, nutrient retention, and moisture regimes, with the intent of using these results for further investigations into the feasibility of using native vegetation for runoff quality remediation in agricultural drainage ditches.

Approach:
Use laboratory (greenhouse) experiments to assess physiological response and nutrient retention of selected wetland macrophytes under optimal and stressed conditions. Later studies will transfer this knowledge to the field for validation and further refinement.
