The count of features found in the search appears just above the search results. This count includes the number of unique features listed in the results. If the same feature is listed twice, (such as for Mars Planetocentric East and Mars Planetographic West), it will only count as one feature in the resulting count of features found.
To show or hide some of the fields (columns) returned in the results, choose which columns to show:
The feature name, or Name field, can never be hidden. Click the feature name to see all the details about that feature.
Show All Fields will show a new field Name (Legacy). This field shows the "old style" spelling of the feature name using specialized codes in place of letters with diacritical marks. The old style diacritical codes are three characters, starting with a pipe (|), followed by a symbol representing the diacritical mark (for example, colon ':' for an umlaut), and the letter to which the diacritical mark is applied. For example, |:u represents ü (lower case u with an d umlaut).
To sort the results, choose which columns to use for sorting:
Map and Quad sorts are complex, and may take a minute or two to return the results.
All letters with diacritical marks and names in brackets are sorted alphabetically, ignoring the diacritical marks and brackets. For example, [Yakovlev] appears before Yeats, and Sūr Dās appears before Surikov.
The body option selects which bodies to include in the search. The option "All Bodies" will be checked when the page is loaded. To narrow the search to one or more bodies click on the body or bodies of interest. Note at least one option must be selected for the search to work properly.
This option will restrict the search to features that contain the input
letters in the name. The search is case insensitive, so the feature
name can be input as upper or lower case. Note if this field is left blank all feature names will be searched.
Example:
If "Mon" is input, the feature names selected would include:
Acmon
Akna Montes
Anala Mons
The asterick character (*) may be used as a wildcard.
Example:
If "Vall*s" is input, the feature names selected would include:
Vallis Alpes
Valles Marineris
When searching for names containing letters with diacritical marks, unmarked letters may be used.
Examples:
Cezanne will return Cézanne
Kenko will return Kenkō
The feature type option selects which feature types to include in the search. The option "All" will be checked when the page is loaded.
This option will restrict the search to features that are a specific
diameter or in a selected range of diameters. The "Greater Than"
field is the lower bound of diameters that will be selected and the
"Less Than" field is the upper bound. Note if this field is left
blank all features will be searched.
Examples:
If "100" is input in the "Greater Than" field and the "Less Than"
field is left blank, only features greater than 100 will be returned in
the search.
If "100" is input in the "Greater Than" field and the "Less Than"
field is "230" only features greater than 100 and less than 230 will
be returned in the search.
This option will restrict the search to features that are within a selected area on the face of a body. The four fields are used to create a window within which the search will be performed. Note if these fields are left blank all features will be searched. Longitudes may be provided in either Western Longitude or Eastern Longitude coordinates by selecting one of the buttons to denote the choice, and the correct area of each body will be searched.
Examples:
For a Western Longitude search:
If "Northern Latitude of Window" is "30"
"Southern Latitude of Window" is "10"
"Western Longitude of Window" is "50"
"Eastern Longitude of Window" is "30"
The search will concentrate on:
For an Eastern Longitude search:
If "Northern Latitude of Window" is "30"
"Southern Latitude of Window" is "10"
"Western Longitude of Window" is "30"
"Eastern Longitude of Window" is "50"
The search will concentrate on:
Note the following when using this option:
The longitude option, Western Longitude or Eastern Longitude, does not affect the longitude results returned by the search. The longitude values displayed in the search results will be in the default coordinate reference system for each body, as described here:
This option will restrict the search to features that have an approval
date within a selected range. The "Beginning Date" field is the lower
bound of date that will be selected and the "Ending Date" field is
the upper bound. Note if this field is left blank all features will be
searched.
Examples:
If "1974" is input in the "Beginning Date" field and the "Ending
Year" field is left blank only features that have been approved since
1974 will be returned in the search.
If "1900" is input in the "Beginning Date" field and the "Ending
Year" field is "1950" only features approved between 1900 and 1950
will be returned in the search.
Starting in September 2006, the full date of approval is recorded (year, month, and day). To narrow a search to a month, provide the year and month as the starting and ending dates. To narrow a search to a few days or weeks, fill in the year, month, and day for the starting and ending dates.
Examples:
Beginning Date of "2006-9" and Ending Date of "2006-9" will return all
the features approved in the month of September 2006.
Beginning Date of "2006-10" and Ending Date of "2006-11" will return all
the features approved in the months of October and November 2006.
Beginning Date of "2006-11-15" and Ending Date of "2006-11-30" will return all
the features approved between November 15th and 30th, 2006.
The approval status option selects which approval status to include in
the search. The option "ANY" will be checked when the page is loaded.
This option restricts the search to names from a specified continent or large geographic area that is the origin of the name. Valid entries can be found in the Abbreviations for Continents, Countries, and Ethnic Groups.
This option restricts the search to names whose origin information have been obtained from a specified source. Valid entries can be found in the Abbreviations for Continents, Countries, and Ethnic Groups.
This option restricts the search to names whose origin information have
been obtained from a specified source. Valid entries can be found in the
Sources of Planetary Names.
This option restricts the search to features associated with the quadrangle name matching the search. Searching for "H-1" will return results for quads H-1 and H-10 through H-15.
This option restricts the search to features associated with the map containing the search value in the publication number or title. Thus, names associated with I2366 can be found by entering "I2366" or "Hellas" for the map search value. The map publication number will be displayed in the results. Click the map publication number to see details about that map if any exist.
