Urbanized Area Maps
EPA has developed a set of digitized maps for each urbanized area [PDF Format] as defined by the 2000 US Census. These maps are intended to assist authorized states (and EPA Regional Offices for unauthorized states) as they develop their Phase II municipal programs and permits. Municipalities will also find these maps useful as they outline the area that will require coverage [PDF Format] under an NPDES permit and development and implementation of a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan.
Maps
For each urbanized area, two maps have been developed:
- Overview - Provides a general outline of the "urbanized area," including incorporated areas or areas of a county that are included within the "urbanized area."
- Detailed Map with Roads - Adds street level details so that the exact boundaries of the urbanized area can easily be determined. (Note: This file may appear black when first opened. Use the zoom tool in Adobe Acrobat (5.0) to clearly view the street level detail.)
Note: For urban areas that extended beyond State lines, locate the specific urban area map information by selecting the major central city. For example, the urban area map information for Alexandria, Virginia is found by accessing the urban area map for Washington, DC.
State Summary
A summary file has been created for each state. It contains two tables:
- Urbanized Areas - Provides detail on the places (towns, suburbs, other incorporated areas, etc.) that are included in each urbanized area. (This table updates Appendix 6 of the Preamble to the Final Phase II regulations.)
- Areas Outside Urbanized Areas - Contains a list of areas outside the designated "urbanized areas" which meet the Phase II population and density qualifications (population greater than 10,000 people and a population density of 1,000 people per square mile). These areas may be designated by the permitting authority as requiring permit coverage under the Stormwater Phase II regulations. (This table updates Appendix 7 of the Preamble to the Final Phase II regulations.)
