London Interns Tour USGS Facility in St. Petersburg, FL Feb. / Mar. 2003 in this issue:  previous story | next story On January 8, Kim Yates hosted a group of approximately 20 interns from the University of London for a tour of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)'s Center for Coastal and Watershed Studies in St. Petersburg, FL. The students were led by professors Kate Spencer and Sarah James on a tour of South Florida as part of their program on environmental policy. The students were 5th-year undergraduates majoring in geology, chemistry, biology, geography, and engineering. Unlike the United States, the United Kingdom has a 5-year undergraduate program and a 1-year intensive Master's program. The students take two semesters of focused studies and one semester of project work, and then complete a 10,000-word thesis in 3 weeks. Kim organized the tour so that the students had opportunities to interact with scientists working on different aspects of the Tampa Bay Pilot Study. Several of these students are interested in undertaking Master's projects in collaboration with USGS scientists. The students were excited about the work being done by the USGS, and many positive ideas for projects were generated by the tour. The USGS is in the process of pursuing a cooperative agreement with the University of London for a formal student-exchange program.
