Technical Abstract: Fiber is a basic raw material in the textile industry. All the changes in spinning technology have in common the requirement of unique and often greater cotton fiber quality, especially for strength. We used a G. anomalum introgression line, 7235, characterized as having good fiber quality, developed in China, to identify molecular markers linked to fiber strength QTLs. By use of F2 and F3 populations derived from a cross between 7235 and TM-1, a widely used geneitc standard of Upland cotton, nine molecular markers(3 SSRs and 6 RAPDs)linked to two fiber strength QTLs were identified. One was a major QTL that explained more than 30% of the phenotypic variation, and another one was detected only in one location. These two QTLs were mapped to Chromosome 5 and 10. The DNA markers linked to this QTL can be used in marker-assisted selection in increasing fiber strength of commericial cultivars.
