Cleanup in the Southeast

National Information
Land Cleanup and Redevelopment

The Southeast region's waste management program office handles the solid waste and emergency response cleanup responsibilities under the policies, guidance and direction of the US Environmental Protection Agency Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response. The Superfund program responds to abandoned and active hazardous waste sites, and accidental oil and chemical releases. Our office manages land disposal of hazardous waste and underground storage tanks, and provides technical assistance to southeastern state, local and private sector stakeholders to establish safe waste management practices. Our Brownfields program staff collaborate with our partners to redevelop and reuse potentially contaminated sites.

The Southeast region is working to preserve and restore the land using the most effective waste management and cleanup methods available. We use a hierarchy of approaches to protect the land: reducing waste at its source, recycling waste, managing waste effectively by preventing spills and releases of toxic materials, and cleaning up contaminated properties. The Region is especially concerned about threats to our most sensitive populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic diseases. EPA draws upon two environmental laws to address these concerns: the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA or Superfund).
