Technical Abstract: Tobacco plants expressing an active form of maize ribosome inactivating protein and overexpressing tobacco anionic peroxidase in homozygous state were crossed, and hybrid plants expressing both proteins were examined for insect resistance relative to a wild-type cross. Significant feeding rate reductions were noted for both the corn earworm and cigarette beetle larvae in leaves from both younger and older plants in the transgenic cross compared to the wild-type cross. Significantly higher mortality of both insect species that fed on the transgenic leaves compared to wild-type leaves was also noted in some cases.
