Technical Abstract: Estolides have shown great promise as a biodegradable lubricant when compared to commercially available industrial products such as petroleum-based hydraulic fluids, soy-based fluids, and petroleum oils. A series of estolides (oleic estolide 2-ethylhexyl esters and coco-oleic estolide 2-ethylhexyl esters) and estolide based products (distilled monomer fractions) were formulated with different concentrations of experimental and commercial anti-oxidant packages. The experimental packages were binary mixtures of hindered phenol (HP) and aromatic amine (AA) type anti-oxidants, with varying HP to AA ratios. The estolide formulations were evaluated for their oxidative stability using the rotating bomb oxidative test (RBOT) following ATSM D-2272-98 Method. Low concentrations of the experimental anti-oxidant packages greatly improved the thermal stabilities of the estolides, and showed promise for formulating a competitive bio-based lubricant. The oxidative stabilities of the formulated estolides and estolide based products will be compared to those of commercially available lubricants and experimental lubricant samples.
