Ozark Plateaus Study Unit Activities

Black River trace element synoptic

Objectives: The primary objective of the Black River synoptic was to collect water, bed sediment, and biological tissue quality data (primarily trace element concentrations) and biological community data to the effects of lead-zinc mining on streams in the Ozark Plateaus.

Approach: Sites were selected in forested and mining portions of a lead-zinc mining area of southeastern Missouri. Water quality, bed sediment, and biological (macroinvertebrates and periphyton communities; fish tissue) samples were collected in the summer of 1995. Water, bed sediment, and fish tissue data were described and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Periphyton and selected water and bed sediment data were described and analyzed using a number of statistical approaches such as box plots, descriptive statistics, non-parametric multiple comparison tests, correlation, and multivariate procedures as part of a study of periphyton communities at sites across the Ozark Plateaus.

Timing: Sites were sampled in 1995 (water quality).

Targeted constituents: Constituents included trace elements, major ions, and nutrients. Trace elements were sampled in water, bed sediment, and fish tissue. Benthic macroinvertebrate and periphyton (attached algae) communities were sampled and biota were counted and identified.
