U.S. Department of Education
Releases Strategic Plan 2001-2005

The American public consistently rates education among its top national priorities. The public rightly expects the U.S. Department of Education (ED), in partnership with states, communities, institutions, and other Federal agencies, to carry out its responsibilities to effectively and efficiently support educational excellence and equity for all children.

On September 30, 2000, the Department transmitted to Congress and released to the public its Strategic Plan for 2001-2005. The strategies in the Plan are built from the Department's mission, "To ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence throughout the Nation," and help to identify Department-wide issues that need to be addressed.

In our effort to improve the agency's performance, we will work continuously to apply this Strategic Plan as a management tool for the Department.
