Study unit synopticObjectives: The objective of the study unit synoptic network was to provide data to supplement the data collected at the fixed surface water sites.Approach: Sites were selected that were similar to many of the fixed sites. For example, one of the fixed sites was a small-basin, forested site in the Springfield Plateau; two additional synoptic sites were selected in small, forested basins in the Springfield Plateau. Water quality samples were collected in the spring of 1994, summer of 1994, and spring of 1995. Biological samples (macroinvertebrate, periphyton, and, at some sites, fish) were collected in the summer of 1994. Water-quality and biological data were described and analyzed using a number of statistical approaches such as box plots, descriptive statistics, non-parametric multiple comparison tests, correlation, and multivariate procedures. Timing: Sites were sampled in 1994 and 1995 (water quality) or in 1994 (biology). Targeted constituents: Constituents included major ions, nutrients, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, and other organic compounds, radionuclide, and trace elements (metals). Fish, benthic macroinvertebrate, and periphyton (attached algae) communities were sampled and biota were counted and identified. | |
